Other than many tight land laws and regulations, never mind Health and safety, land owner’s permission, equipment & Insurance etc... Frown - Thats why there are so many Illegal trails, that get built, then destroyed Frown * Oh yeah and I have voted guys Salute *

No one said it would be easy adrenalinaddict. These people have to go through the same loop holes and hardships to build trails that you find to be too much of a hassle. I had to go through them as well for 1 1/2 years before I could touch dirt in the hills outside town. You just need more dedication.
Anything worth having is never easy to obtain.

I think what adrenalinaddict is trying to say is that, in Canada and the US there is a lot more open land than here in the cramped UK, there are not many places left where it is suitable to build trails that will easily be seen and torn down. That's what it's like round here.

This is whats great about canada . In ireland some random construcuion company that dont built mountainbike trails got 100,000 and theyre gonna build a horrible wide and flat xc track. Were not allowed build our own trails because they got knocked down and all the good trails are in the middle of nowehere with no uplifts because they block the roads with gates. Even though there is plenty of land and if they can build XC they can DH they choose not to .Voted also.

The problem in the UK is that there is not enough riders, and enough space to make trails a high priority for local councils. Due to the lower demand, they don’t give a shit. Trust me, I have tried contacting them, they always give the same answer. Sorry but we cannot allow the construction of mountain bike trails on our land due to the high health and safety risks and the dangers that are associated with this ‘aggressive’ type of mountain biking (anything that features an obstacle designed to make the rider airborne). The one time I did make a bit of progress ‘loads’ of dogs walkers objected to the development of a cycle trial, unfortunately we are not short of dog walkers locally. Perhaps my local council are just not willing, unlike say other Councils in Wales etc... I guess there is a lot greater demand over there (and a lot better landscape). The highest chance that you can build something permanent is that you build it without the council’s permission, then hope that they don’t mind, or don’t consider the cost of removing the trail to warrant the ‘danger’ it poses to the public. Unfortunately there aren’t enough riders locally for us to try achieve something like the NSMBA. Best of luck to the NSMBA though!

Note to all UK trail builders: Don’t let my rather depressing speech put you off your ideas Smile – It’s my local Council that are my problem, there rubbish!

UK is selling off a million acres of forest. Start a petition to buy some then you can do what u want with it.

flag adrenalinaddict (Oct 27, 2010 at 10:06)
I would, but the forestry areas for sale, aren’t near me at all, and there is in total no more that 20 or so riders locally who would apreciate a gravity orientated trail, oh wait, there aren’t many if any hills nearby either Frown - Hampshire sucks, I moving to Wales or Scotland! or the Alps! tup

no private landowner in the UK wants people riding on their land due to liability laws - if you injure yourself on someones land, regardless of whos fault it is, it is the landowners responsibility. on top of buying the land you need insurance as well and that requires some measure of organisation.

Agreed with DanB25 - It costs WAY to much to establish a trail in the UK Frown Especialy a FR/DH style trail....Shame Frown

 Hi All,

The NSMBA appreciates your support. However, we discourage people from using unethical means to increase the votes. Please do not sign up with multiple accounts or belittle other projects.

We want the Trails For All project to win by its own merits and not through cheating or bringing others down. After all; mountain bikers are about community and an environment of inclusion.

Rubber side down,
RN ^ NSMBA Treasurer

Would somebody please enlighten me on the "$ 77,500 compensation (~2214 hours at $35/hr)?" Is this saying that trail builders are being paid $35/hr.? If not, what is this $35/hr compensation for?

Tom - that's about the going rate for contractors. The builders would have to pay their own expenses; insurance etc

We are way behind guys. Show them the power of pinkbike. lol

We have almost 500 votes right now - current top spot has 1368

Edit: I had to give 1 vote to the save the salmon project as well, seems like a good cause. As long as that one school doesn't win a new playground (thats the first place entry right now) Not that I'm against them having it... but I think the school should be fundraising for stuff like that... thats how my old elementary school did it.
